We built the carrier we’d want to drive for.
Advanced Trucking is family-owned, Indianapolis-based, and built almost entirely of owner-operators who book their own freight.
Since 2016
Why this company exists
Advanced Trucking is family-owned. Dennis and Daniel Nottingham started it in Indianapolis in 2016 and the two of them still own and run it — Daniel handles most of the day to day with the drivers.
Neither owner came to this from behind a desk. Daniel has been driving for more than eleven years and still takes a truck out from time to time. Dennis holds a CDL himself and will cover a run when one needs covering. He has built and run several businesses along the way — including growing a one-person real estate operation into a 70-agent brokerage — which is why the back office here gets run like a business rather than an afterthought. Before any of it, he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Elrod (FFG-55).
About forty owner-operators run under our authority today, and the model has not changed since the first truck: a driver who owns his truck should get to run it like a business. They book their own freight, negotiate their own rates and choose their own lanes, and nobody here assigns a load a driver didn’t agree to. We handle the part that eats a driver’s evenings — settlements, IFTA, insurance, plates, permits — and we keep our own shop and our own mechanic, so a service or an annual inspection is something you schedule rather than something you hunt for on the road.
We’re not the biggest carrier in Indiana and we’re not trying to be. Forty trucks whose drivers make money and stay beats a hundred that turn over every nine months.
Straight about who this suits
Self-dispatch isn’t for every driver. Some want the phone to ring with the next load already on it, and that’s a legitimate way to run — it just isn’t this. If you want to pick the freight, argue the rate and own the outcome, you’ll do well here. If you’d rather be dispatched, you’ll be happier somewhere else, and we’d rather tell you that now than after you’ve moved your truck.
What we’re here to do
Mission, vision and what we hold each other to
Mission
Give owner-operators the training, the tools and the back office to run a profitable business — and then stay out of the way of how they run it.
Vision
To be the carrier owner-operators name first when another driver asks who to run with. Nationally known for it, and still small enough that you know who’s on the other end of the phone.
Values
- Tell a driver the truth, including when it costs us the applicant
- Answer the phone
- Own the mistake and fix it
- Keep learning the freight market, and teach it
- A driver’s time is his money
The office
Who you’ll actually be talking to
Seven people, all of them reachable at the same number. No call centre, no ticket queue, no “your dispatcher is no longer with the company.”
Co-owns Advanced Trucking. Navy veteran, holds a CDL himself, and will cover a run when one needs covering. If something has gone wrong that nobody else can fix, this is the desk it lands on.
Co-owns Advanced Trucking with Dennis and handles most of the day-to-day with the drivers. Eleven-plus years behind the wheel himself, and he still runs from time to time. If you run here, Daniel is the voice you’ll hear most.
Your file, your compliance, your inspections and your DOT paperwork. The person to call when something happens on the road and you need an answer fast.
Leads the coordination desk. She doesn’t book your loads — that’s yours — she handles the broker packets, the invoicing, the lumpers and everything else that turns a load you booked into money in your settlement.
Broker packets, rate confirmations, invoicing and lumpers — the paperwork behind a load you booked, so you can keep driving.
